40-Car IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Field Set For Circuit of The Americas Next Week

All four IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship classes – totaling 40 cars – have been entered for next week’s fourth round of the 12-race season, the Advance Auto Parts SportsCar Showdown at Circuit of The Americas on Saturday, May 6.

A Closer Look: Martin Tomczyk

Just prior to the one-hour mark in the April 8 BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach, Martin Tomczyk steered the No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM into the race lead.

While the first two races of the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season had been a struggle for the two-car BMW Team RLL team, it was no surprise to see an M6 at the front of the field. After all, the BMW team earned its second consecutive Long Beach pole last year, and Bill Auberlen and Dirk Werner won in 2015 driving a BMW.

Team Owner Bobby Oergel doesn’t mince his words when talking about PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports’ start to the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.

“We’re definitely not happy with the results, no,” he said. “What we’re doing is looking forward to better days to come.”

Managing A Pair of Programs

Mike Johnson is a name some racing fans will recognize, but many may not. Either way, Johnson has been heavily involved at the highest levels of North American sports car racing for well over a decade.

Johnson currently serves as team manager for Stevenson Motorsports, calling strategy for the No. 57 Audi R8 LMS GT3 in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. However, winding back the clock to the year 2000, Johnson was one of the first team owners in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series.

Michael Shank Racing Partners With Andretti Autosport For Indianapolis 500 Effort

IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competitor Michael Shank Racing will team with Andretti Autosport to campaign the No. 50 Michael Shank Racing with Andretti Autosport Honda/Dallara with driver Jack Harvey for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500. 

The collaboration marks the newest chapter for Columbus, Ohio-based Mike Shank, who competed as a driver in the open wheel ranks and made one IndyCar start in 1997 before moving to focus on team ownership. 

New Audi R8 LMS GT4: Audi Sport Customer Racing Headed For Growth

Before the New York International Auto Show, the Audi R8 LMS premiered in its GT4 version.

Audi Sport GmbH’s customer racing program has been experiencing rapid growth. Audi has been offering the Audi R8 LMS GT3 race car since 2009, followed by the second generation of this success model in 2015, and the RS 3 LMS for the TCR category in 2016. Now Audi Sport’s portfolio of models has been extended once again.
